Managing a summer camp program can be hard work and it’s certainly a challenge. With no academic calendar in play it’s important to provide a structured, activity-filled day, but don’t forget to loosen up and have fun. That means creating a variety of activities that can help the children to explore, learn, and of course have fun.

When gathering summer camp ideas, it is helpful to think in themes. For example, focusing on “Nature” one week will enable you to enjoy the beautiful weather as you spend your days outside looking for plants and insects or listening to summer sounds. You can do leaf rubbings, press flowers, try recipes with fresh fruit, and end the week visiting with some live animals for the children to see, touch, and learn about. Get on the Internet and find new ideas for art projects, activities, and games.

A summer camp calendar of all activities will help the teachers know what to expect week to week and contribute ideas of their own—maybe a good storybook for a rainy day. You can never have too many options when working with young children.
