Now the child that was in us can enjoy passing the same tales on to a new generation. The experience can be warm, intimate and provide special "quality time" for the family.

Sometimes children do not completely understand the story or poem being read to them but they do enjoy listening to the tone, cadence and modulation of the adult's voice. This is a natural way for children to learn about the structure of language. The human voice brings words to life and reading aloud to your child also provides you with the chance to expand your child's vocabulary, concepts and memory skills. Children are naturally inquisitive, so this is the time to let them ask questions and interrupt as they find out "why" things happen in a story. Why does the old woman live in a shoe? That is an excellent question and adults can have a lot of fun in providing the answers.

READING TO YOUR CHILD

The phenomena of connecting experience to language is one of the most important foundations of learning how to read, and providing children direct contact with books is just as important. The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is when adults take the time to read aloud to their children.

When adults read aloud to their children, the child quickly learns that books are wonderful things. It can be a terrific experience for both the adult and the child when books are chosen that create magical moments of happiness for both partners. Stories, poems, and rhymes should delight the young imaginative mind when read aloud. It is not uncommon for adults to revert to the same books and stories that they first heard read to them when they were children.
