The following is a letter template letting parents know about an illness that may be spreading in your school. When parents are made aware and know the symptoms to look for, their fears are eased and illnesses can be contained.

Illness Letter Template

Date

Dear Parents,
It has come to our attention that a child in the (name of classroom) classroom has contracted (name of illness). While (name of illness) does not pose an immediate risk to your child, we ask that you monitor your child for the following symptoms.

List symptoms synonymous with the illness. This information can be found at www.cdc.gov or www.webmd.com.

In order to keep our children healthy, please keep your child home if he/she exhibits any of these symptoms and obtain a doctor’s note before returning to the center. We appreciate your help maintaining the health and happiness of our children.

Sincerely,
(Your Name)

It is very important that you maintain the privacy of your children and do not mention any child’s or family member’s name. Additionally, do not disclose the identity of the sick person if and when a parent asks (and they will).

With the recent media coverage of the Swine Flu, parents are scared. Each day they bring their child to your center with a secret worry of the illnesses that lurk therein. Each parent handles this fear differently; some confront you with demands to know all your cleaning procedures while others secretly watch and listen for signs of illnesses in their child’s classroom peers.

The best way to handle fears of illnesses is to confront the issue head on. Make sure you have procedures set in place for the sanitation of your center as well as for handling an incidence of a sick child. Make sure you make these procedures known to your parents and let them know what they can expect from you, while in turn letting them know what you expect from them.
