Physical exercise is critical in the early years as the child is developing gross motor skills, coordination and balance. Children who are encouraged to sit and stare at electronics rather than be active are more likely to become sedentary and not develop important muscular and coordination abilities.

Weight needs to be evaluated by a professional doctor. Weight factors include height and age as well as diet. A good physician will consider these issues before making a pronouncement. Sometimes parents become overly concerned because a child’s growth happens unpredictably, and he or she might suddenly seem to gain weight simply because they have “stopped” growing for a short while.

Children who are chubby develop low self-esteem and are often teased by playmates. It is very important for parents to be sensitive to the child’s emotional as well as physical condition.

Obesity can be found in children for any number of reasons, such as genetic factors, lack of exercise, unhealthy eating patterns, or, rarely, because of medical conditions. However, lifestyle, diet, exercise are also very important factors to consider when making a determination. Television, video games, handheld electronic games, and the increased use of the PC are all new factors that are influencing the level of activity children are engaged in. So we need to ask the most important question: is my child getting enough physical exercise?
