Many children feel sleepy after a knock on the head, and sometimes light vomiting has been observed. After that, parents need to watch for the following situations:

  • Repeated vomiting
  • Any blood discharged from ears, or nose
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Visual impairment, or unequal pupil size
  • Abnormal speech or motor control
  • Neck stiffness, strain or painSeizures
  • Injury to the eye
  • Foreign object in ear or nose

Obviously if the child is unresponsive Emergency Services must be called and parents should refrain from moving the child by themselves.

Nothing is worse for a parent to witness than their child hitting their head, or having their child entering the room in tears and holding their head after accidentally hitting it. When should a parent bring their child to the hospital or doctor after a head injury? What are the warning signs of a serious head injury?

The tears and crying after a minor blow to the head is a good sign that the child will be fine, as long as the crying stops after ten to fifteen minutes.
