Doctors recommend that people eat a wide variety of nutritional foods from the food group pyramid. They include: 1) bread, cereal, rice, and pasta 2) vegetables and fruits 3) dairy products and protein foods such as meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts and finally 4) low intake of fats, oils and sweets. Parents can help lower their child’s weight by reducing the amount of fat that is eaten daily. Changing from whole milk to low fat milk and cheese products can start the process. Eating lean “fat trimmed” meat and skinless chicken also reduces fat intake. Children under the age of two should be considered differently, however, and once again consultation with a doctor is necessary.
Simply restricting sweets is not the answer. Rather it is more important to promote their intake in moderation. The same could be said of salty or fatty foods. Promotion of healthy food choices in the family household is a way that the parents can act as role models and help children learn about eating healthy. Also, meal times should not be rushed or “on-the-go.” Fast food usually contains fatty foods consumed quickly. Meals that promote family togetherness produce bonding and encourage children to eat responsibly and in moderation. Take children shopping and show them what the healthiest foods are.

Parents concerned about their child’s weight should meet with the family doctor for consultation. Childhood obesity can be caused by several factors, including medical conditions and only a doctor should place a child on a “restrictive diet,” and only for medical reasons.
Parents concerned with their child’s weight may make a snap decision such as: “Okay, no more cookies or candy for you,” and actually restrict a portion of nutrients that a child needs in their life for a balanced diet. Haphazard implementation of diet restrictions could actually harm a child’s health, growth and development.
