“Irritant rash and Allergic rash” are largely visible on the visible areas of the skin (not the folds or creases). They may be caused by chemicals in waste matter, a reaction to detergent soap or even medication applied to the skin.

“Intertrigo,” is usually formed by dampness and heat and happens in the deep creases of the skin. Another rash that can develop in the folds of the skin is called “Seborrhea,” and this produces a slimy surface and ochre colored scales on the skin.
One other rash, called “Psoriasis,” can occur. Usually psoriasis produces other symptoms including pitted nails and silvery flakes of skin on the torso, face and hair.

What produces the rash? The common factor is wet skin. Wearing diapers allows urine to collect and with friction the surface of the skin becomes irritated and raw. Chemicals contained in feces are more prone to flourish and cause the skin to become inflamed. Common bacteria and yeast can form and penetrate the skin surface more easily. Yeast, a microorganism, multiplies rapidly in damp warm skin.

By far the most common skin problem for young children is diaper rash. For adults, the introduction of diapers was a relief and an easy way to deal with pre-toilet trained children’s waste. However, since their use has proliferated, rashes caused by diapers are a very common ailment for children from infancy until the time they master toilet training.

There are many different categories of the problem, all with different symptoms and even names. Here are a few of them

“Friction rash,” is probably the most common of diaper rashes and most children who wear diapers will develop the symptoms. It can be observed where friction is found when wearing the nappies, such as the inside of the thighs, or around the grip of elastic that holds the diapers in place. This type of rash is relatively minor and may reoccur. Increased diaper changing, and ointments usually diminish the symptoms.
