Is it unsafe for parents to sleep with an infant? It is not completely safe to sleep in the same bed with a small baby because there are dangers from the bedclothes and from the parents' movements during deep sleep. Expert organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have also cautioned against co-sleeping. However, many working parents find it extremely hard to separate themselves from their baby at night because they've been away from the child throughout the day. While this is understandable, parents should observe the following safeguards:
|
Co-sleep only if all of you have plenty of bed space, that way the baby will not be crowded too closely to an adult.
Have a firm mattress and very few bedclothes and/or pillows that could get close to the infant's face.
Never sleep with an infant if the parent has been drinking or are so tired the parent could possibly roll over on top of the child.
