Allergies or the Common Cold?

Parents are often troubled by the problems children have with allergies and the common cold. Children are susceptible to both and the symptoms can appear the same. So how do you tell the difference between a cold and allergies?

She probably has allergies if...

  • Her nasal discharge is clear and she is sneezing frequently.
  • Her eyes are watery and itchy.
  • Due to inflammation in the nasal passages, she may rub and contort her face.

She probably has a cold if...

  • Nasal discharge at first is clear, but becomes thicker and greenish in color as symptoms progress.
  • Her cough is more pronounced and “wet sounding.”
  • She has a fever.

If you become concerned about your child's health or have questions about how to treat her symptoms, call your doctor.
